Successful Drive for House of Hope!

URW has been a drop off point for the House of Hope. Last week we took a car-load of items to Steve Anderson for his shelter....needless to say, he was pleased, and we want to take this opportunity to thank all those who donated! URW members are the greatest!

Governor Tim Kaine's annoucement

URW had a presence at the Governor's annoucement of the Robertson bridge construction. Rep. Tom Perriello spoke as well, and the event was also attended by Rep. Don Merricks, and Rep. Danny Marshall. Pittsylvania County Administrator Dan Sleeper, along with Linda Green, President of the Dan River Business Development Center and Jeremy Stratton, Economic Development Director for the City of Danville were also at this wonderful announcement. The City of Danville has received stimulus money to construct a 4-lane bridge at the Robertson Bridge site. This will increase the economic development potential for the city - which is a good thing not only for URW, but for the entire community. Right now 20,000+ vehicles use the bridge everyday, and this is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years - so congratulations from URW to the City and community of Danville!

...and then came the Spring Fling!

URW sponsored WAKG's Live Remote at the Spring Fling. We set up under their tent, and helped promote the credit union's work all day on Saturday, April 25th, 2009. Many thanks to WAKG for plugging URW everytime they were on the air! Garry and Sherry spent the day talking to people, many were already members - and I (Debbie) spent time with the camera - (yeah, the easy job!)

Successful Youth Day!

Youth Day at URW was a successful event! The City of Danville Fire and Rescue "loaned" us vehicles, complete with Fire Fighters and Rescue Workers to explain their work; the Police Dept.'s Tim Scearce was on hand making identification cards with fingerprints for the kids. We had the Rock Climbing Wall here - from Fun-Time Amusements on North Main, and of course, free hotdogs, chips and sodas from the Coke Trailer (compliments of Coca Cola Bottling Co.) and manned by our own workers from our great Retirees Club! Alex and Sandra were here with a live radio remote from WBTM - we had a great day!
Congratulations to our iPod winners, Chelsea Lavinder and Benjamin Hudson, and also to the $50 gift card winner Bryashia Jones! And for more pictures of the fun, click here: http://urwyouthday.blogspot.com/

Neighborhood Leadership Institute

URW is proud to announce our two graduates of the latest Neighborhood Leadership Institute, Aremethia Jones (Meme), and Sherry Moore. Congratulations on your graduation, and on all your hard work as you created your projects!

Happy Admin Assistant Day!

Sherry Moore really is a busy office manager for URW and it's a job that takes a special person - we are glad that Sherry takes care of all of us, so on Administrative Assistant day, Sherry was treated with a floral gift, and a cookie cake - however, as you can see, by the time I got there with my camera, the cake "disappeared(?)"

YOUTH DAY AT THE CREDIT UNION!

The Theme for this year's National Credit Union Week is the Magic of Saving. To celebrate we have several things planned. April 21st, Chris Simmons, the indirect loan officer at the Arnett Branch will speak to a group of business students at GW High School on "How to Buy a Car." Chris has infinite expertise in this area and he will provide some valuable information to the students. Thursday, April 23rd, from 3 - 5 pm we will celebrate Youth Day here at URW's Arnett Branch. We have many items of interest planned for the day - the fire department will be here with a vehicle, as will the Rescue and Life Saving Crew from the City of Danville. The Danville Police Department will be here from 1 - 5 pm offering a fingerprinting service to the children of parents wishing to take advantage of this great safety opportunity. We'll have the Rock Climbing Wall, WBTM will be here for a live remote, and of course, our retirees will be working to serve free hotdogs, chips and sodas (or juice). Please make plans to bring your child for this enjoyable afternoon of learning and fun!

Drawing Winners!

Congratulations to our winners of "Baxter, the Giant Easter Bunny" and a basket of toys. The drawing was held at the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Chris Yancey won the Boys Drawing, and Hailey Wyatt won the Girls' Drawing.

Action at the easter Egg Hunt!

URW's Annual Easter Egg Hunt seemed bring excitement to the kids - and even the parents. The Hunt started promptly at 4 pm, with a storm brandishing the horizon - but we were lucky and the storm turned, so the rest of the evening was beautiful! Hotdogs, chips, drinks and cupcakes were served free of charge - and the Easter Bunny made an appearance too! A special thanks to the Retiree Club volunteers for making the event a success, and to Paula Hartman from URW for helping sign kids in. Once the event wound down, all the leftover food was taken to House of Hope, Danville’s Homeless Shelter, where the residents there loved the idea of a “hotdog dinner!”

Bunny Hop

Watch these kids as they enjoy "dancing" with the easter Bunny!

Racin' & Tastin'

What a huge success this year's event was. When I arrived it was packed with people having a great time. URW had a corporate table for the Board of Directors....Ted Fitz was on the scene, but he has a new granddaughter that he is so excited about - so he was out of there before I could even think to snap his picture! Congratulations Ted! That new little girl will be such a joy in your family's life! LC and Bernice were there - they had to spread themselves thin, because they had places at at least 3 different tables - and they were working the event too! WOW! Jimmy Newcomb also slid around from table to table enjoying the company - and Emerson Phillips and his wife Delores also enjoyed the evening. Patrick Jinks was everywhere all evening taking his professional quality pictures - and before I could leave, I ran in Sherry Moore - who is always volunteering and participating (we love ya Sherry!) Then - lo and behold, who do I see - the Easter Bunny himself! Well not, actually, but Donald Pippin from DCC is going to be playing our Easter Bunny at the Kidz Club annual Easter Egg Hunt this coming Friday! All in all, it was a great evening and everybody was at Racin' at Tastin!

Easter Egg Hunt!

GET READY FOR THE ANNUAL URW EASTER EGG HUNT!

Our youngest members have a treat in store on Friday, April 10th, 2009! If you are age 12 and under you are invited to our Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Cookout. Over 4,000 eggs have been stuffed with candy and toys and our Retirees Club volunteers are standing ready to hide the eggs! We'll have hot dogs & fixin's, cupcakes and beverages - and who knows - the real Easter Bunny may make an appearance.

Parents, if your child has an account at URW, bring them to Dan Daniel Park, Shelter 17 from 4 pm - 7 pm. Everyone that attends goes into the drawing for "Baxter" the Giant Easter Bunny and his Basket of Toys! One boy and one girl will win! If your child doesn't have an account with URW, you can open one for only $25 - and your child can join in the fun. If your child has an account, if you make a deposit of $5 or more, they can sign up at the URW branch for an "extra" chance!

Not only does URW have the Easter Egg Hunt, we also have a Christmas Skating Party for our Kidz Club, and we will also have something for Halloween! So make sure your child doesn't miss the fun. Make sure they are members of URW's Kidz Club!
